Two priests were standing with a signboard which read, ‘The End is Near -- Turn Around Before it is too Late.’ A speeding car came along. The driver saw the sign, stuck his head out of the window, yelled, ‘Leave us alone, you religious nuts’, and sped on. He turned the corner. The priests heard the screech of tires and a huge crash. One priest turned to the other and said, ‘Maybe we should just have the signboard read ‘Bridge is out’?’

The problem is wrong signs have been shown to you for far too long. People have talked about ‘mental awareness’ for far too long. There is no such thing. Mental alertness will help enhance your ability to survive in this world. But what is useful in self-preservation need not be useful in self-exploration.

The mind and awareness are dimensions apart. The mind is a useful faculty of discrimination, essential for human survival and self-preservation. But existentially, it is of no consequence whatsoever. The problem today, however, is that the intellect has taken on a disproportionately important role. Modern education has encouraged a lopsided development of this faculty. The essence of the intellect is to divide. So humanity has embarked on a journey of wholesale division, discrimination and dissection. People have split everything to a point where they have split even the invisible atom.

Once you unleash the divisive intellect on the world, it does not allow you to be with anything totally. It is a wonderful instrument for survival; at the same time, it is a terrible barrier that stands between you and your experience of the unity of life.  The mind can be cultivated. Awareness cannot. Awareness is not something you can do. It is not an action. It is a state of being. Awareness is what you are.

Sleep, wakefulness, death – these are all just different levels of awareness. Suppose you were dozing and somebody shook you awake. Boom! The whole world returns instantly! That is not a small thing: you recreated the whole of existence instantly. Not in seven days -- in just a moment!

How do you know whether the world exists or not? Only by your experience. There is no other proof. So, awareness is that which can either create or obliterate this existence. That is the magic of awareness. You can pitch your awareness up to different levels. As you notch it up further and further, whole new dimensions of existence open up in your experience. Worlds that you could never imagine become a living reality for you.

When you are asleep, the world does not exist because you are largely unaware. But even in sleep, you are not completely unaware. The difference between a sleeping person and a dead person is one of awareness. Similarly, between a wakeful person and an awakened or self-realized person, the difference is the intensity of awareness.  An awakened person sleeps too, but because of a high level of awareness, some part of him does not sleep. The sense organs shut down, the body relaxes, but everything else is on.

Awareness is a process of inclusiveness, of embracing this entire existence. You cannot do it, but you can set the right conditions so that it happens. If you bring body, mind and energies into alignment, awareness will blossom. In fact it has already blossomed; the whole existence is just awareness! But once that blossoming becomes experiential for you, you suddenly explode into the oneness of existence. This is yoga, the ultimate union.

In the cacophony that surrounds us, to dwell within requires great vigilance on our part. Silence as a regular practice facilitates inner quest. It is the quieting of mental activity. Thoughts travel faster than light. We cannot avoid thoughts. But by silencing the mind, we can scale down the thinking process.  Thinking is the activity associated with thoughts. Needless thinking leads to worry. The practice of silence helps in sensitising us to our inner consciousness, the essence of our being.

German philosopher Nietzsche says, “Our greatest experiences are our quietest moments”.  While loneliness is poverty of the self, solitude is its richness. Theologian Paul Tillich says, “Our language has wisely sensed the two sides of being alone. It has created the word “loneliness” to express the pain of being alone. And it has created the word   “solitude” to express the glory of being alone. We become sensitive to the joy of connecting with the inner self when in solitude; we silently listen to our inner voice.

Advaita texts highlight the power of silence.   Shiva in the form of the young sage, Dakshinamurti, dispells all doubts of his disciples through the power of his silence.  Indeed, when we are troubled and in doubt, we discover answers when we tune in to our inner voice. Much like the musk deer who roams the forest frantically in search of the fragrance of musk, little realising that it abides and exudes from within itself, we look for answers in the external world. Persistent conditioning because of association with external events and happenings poses a challenge.

This challenge can be met through the power of silence and listening.  Combining the twin activities of silence and listening as a daily practice helps in increasing our awareness and connecting with the power within. We then start understanding the import of what Buddha said, “Events happen, deeds are done, consequences happen, but there is no individual doer of deeds”. The Gita expounds this powerfully by giving us the right to actions, not outcomes. Interestingly, this concept has been validated by scientific and mathematical experts.

The butterfly effect proposed by mathematician Edward Lorenz points to the impossibility of determining the future outcomes of two small states whose difference is imperceptible.  Outcomes of our actions are inconsistent despite our best efforts; sometimes for the better, other times for the worse. Our attention therefore has to centre on right intentions and means instead of outcomes. The more we relate and use the power of silence and listening, the better will be our responses to life’s uncertainties.

The practice of silence and listening, besides quickening the path to realising the truth, help us understand the  futility of trying to control outcomes and avoid the constant struggle and concern with what happened and what will be. Our problem stems from an over emphasis on results.  Silence and listening help us refocus our energies on the power within and live life moment by moment; to be more mindful, conscious and sensitive to what we think, say and do.   We realise that silence is a powerful mechanism that we possess into which the world cannot intrude.

Our actions then emanate only from good intent and sincere effort. The benefit will be peace of mind and tranquility despite intense activity.   We will over time gradually accept the Buddha’s words on what enlightenment means, a process of negation rather than gathering anything afresh. Simply put, the ‘end of suffering’.

Q: Sadhguru, is spiritual transformation possible without the help of a Guru? And how does one know who is the right person to take him through that path?

A: If I give you a torchlight, it still does not mean you are going to find your way home. A torch lights up so that you don’t step into a drain or a ditch, but how you use it and whether you walk the right path is left entirely to you. Many people have walked to their death with a torch. They have even done it with headlamps! What you do is always left to you. So, who is the best light? You should not make a conclusion about that. If something works very well for you, if it enhances your life, then try a little more, putting more energy and time into it.
The reason why there has always been so much importance and stress on a Guru is that without a Guru, you cannot transform yourself. It is possible to work towards what you know, but how can you transform yourself into something that you don’t know? To do that, you have to be so aware that you see the natural tendencies of every aspect of energy in the existence. Only a person who has that sense of awareness can walk without a Guru.

Through the Grace of the Guru, in a moment, with just a clap of his hands, things can happen. Sometimes certain situations or certain energies can also do things to people. In these situations, they are acting like a Guru – maybe not in the physical form, but that is what is happening. Transforming yourself into that which you don’t know, or that which you have not tasted, is logically impossible. I am not ruling it out totally. It is possible, but only for very few people. For most others, it is very remote.

Q: Then what is it that allows some people the opportunity to have access to a Guru, while others don’t?
A: So you would like to believe that you are the chosen few? Do you know chosen people have always been eternally in trouble? I must tell you a joke. Once, the leader of the Jewish community on planet Earth, Joshua Goldberg, had his annual dinner appointment with God. He went to dinner and God arrived and sat down at the table with him. A few breadcrumbs were served for dinner. God said Grace and started eating. Joshua just sat there. God looked at him and said, “Joshua, my son, why don’t you eat?” Joshua said, “Father, can I ask you a question?” God answered, “Okay, my son.” Joshua asked, “Dear Father, are we really the chosen people?” God replied, “Why my son, why do you doubt? Yes, you are the chosen people.” Joshua asked, “Father, are we really, really, the chosen people?” “Yes, Joshua. Why are you beginning to doubt? You are the chosen people.” Then Joshua asked, “Dear Father, are we really, really, really the chosen people?” “Yes, yes, yes, you are the chosen people!” Then Joshua got up from the table, straightened his jacket and said, “Why don’t you choose somebody else for a while?”
So, why does one person get access to certain possibilities? A Guru is not a person, but a certain possibility. It is not that only certain people get access to this possibility. Everyone may not have access to the person, but anyone who truly longs, always has access to this energy.
I have initiated more people I have not met than people I have met. That is the reality. When someone really longs, when the longing is deep enough to receive me, I initiate them, wherever they may be. When someone’s heart cries out to know, I am always there. As far as the possibility is concerned, this possibility has happened to a lot more people who have never seen my face. But if you are talking about the person, that is not of great significance.

Being with a Master is never comfortable because he will break all your limitations and ideologies. Knowing the person or having access to the person can be on many levels. Having access to the possibility is only because of the longing that one may have. There are many people who have close access to the person, but don’t know anything about the possibility yet. This has been put forth by many people in many different ways but Gautama put this forth very beautifully. Ananda Tirtha, who was constantly with Gautama throughout his life, remained unenlightened until the end. When people asked, “This man is with you all the time. Why has nothing happened to him?” In answer, Gautama asks, “Can a spoon taste the soup?” That says it all. You need sensitivity. You need to be life sensitive, not ego sensitive.
